Our Story

how it all started

In 1997,  Tom Platt saw a need. Fleming Island was growing, and he saw a need for a local church fully committed to teaching the Bible and living out its truth. With a heart for the Gospel and a vision for a Christ-centered community, he planted what would become Hibernia Baptist Church—with strong support from the Florida Baptist Convention, who played a key role in helping us get started and remain a valued partner in ministry to this day.

Expanding the vision

What started as a small group of believers has grown into a thriving church family. Over the years, we’ve expanded into new buildings, welcomed new pastors, and launched ministries that impact both our local community and the world. We’ve sent and supported missionaries across the globe, all while continuing to disciple and equip the people right here at home. At Hibernia, our mission is simple: We want to lead others to know and follow Jesus.

Where we are headed

While a lot has changed since 1997, our foundation has remained the same: Jesus Christ. We’re not just a church you attend—we’re a family you can grow with, serve alongside, and go on mission together. Right now, we’re building again—literally. We’re currently in the process of expanding our facilities to make room for more people to hear the gospel, be discipled, and be sent out. Whether you’re brand new to faith, new to the area, or just looking for a place to belong, we’d love for you to be part of our story, too.
